Chim-jae

Chim-Jae is a Chinese Hokkien term, “Chim” means deep and “Jae” means outdoor. The “Chim-Jae” area often consists of a well and an area one foot below normal floor level, above this area is a void to serve two purposes: for lighting and for ventilation. It is believed that having Chim-Jae in the house or void in the middle of the house is an equivalent to an opening to receive wealth because wind is a symbol of wealth.
