“Ngor-Kha-Kee” or Arcade is a local word derived from Chinese Hokkien. “Ngor-Kha-Kee” means “five feet wide”, the term is used refer to the walkway with pillars and arch supporting the protruded second floor at the front of the shophouses covering the length of the street. The main purpose of this walkway is to shelter people from Phuket’s sunshine and unpredictable heavy rains. It also represents the generosity of the shophouse’s owners for the passersby by giving up a portion of their own home to become public walkway.
